Key results

  • 30-year cumulative CVD incidence (all 95% CIs): 
    • Intervention: 51.8% (47.1-56.5).
    • Control: 65.7% (57.8-73.6).
  • CVD incidence per 1000 person-years:
    • Intervention: 21.8 (18.8-25.1).
    • Control: 29.0 (23.0-36.2).
  • Adjusted for clinic, risk for first CVD event with intervention was reduced by 27% (HR 0.73; 95% CI, 0.55-0.96; P=.024). 
  • Reverting to normal glucose tolerance (174/576) not surprisingly also reduced risk.

Study design

  • Data analyzed for 576 participants in randomized 6-year Da Qing Diabetes Prevention Study (1986-1992), followed for up to 30 years after participating in diet, exercise, diet+exercise, or neither (control).
