Annual 'Beat Flu' campaign launched in Wales

Public Health Wales (PHW) launched the annual NHS Wales Beat Flu campaign on 3 October 2018. The campaign is promoting the fact that vaccination is the single best way to protect against influenza (flu) and encourages all eligible individuals to get vaccinated.

In 2017, NHS Wales immunised >820,000 individuals with the flu vaccine. This year, PHW is making all primary school children and pre-schoolers aged 2 and 3 years eligible for the nasal spray flu vaccine. This winter, all the staff in residential care and nursing homes who are in close contact with residents are also being offered free flu vaccination for the first time. This is expected to protect care home residents who are more susceptible to complications arising from flu and curb its spread. Pregnant women, those with long-term health conditions and individuals aged ≥65 are also eligible to receive free flu vaccination, and so are unpaid carers and first-aid volunteers.

While individuals may receive the free flu vaccination at their GP Surgery or at various community pharmacies across Wales, health and social care staff are advised to check with their occupational health department or employer about the place and time to get vaccinated.
