Public Health Scotland has published data on arthroplasty (joint replacement) procedures performed in Scotland between 2001 and 2019. The data have been derived from the Scottish Arthroplasty Project, which is one of the oldest arthroplasty registries in the world.
Key findings from the report are as follows:
- The number of annual primary hip or knee replacements performed in Scotland has increased significantly from 7562 in 2001 to 15,649 in 2019.
- Similarly, the number of annual shoulder joint replacements across Scotland has risen from 234 in 2001 to 543 in 2019.
- The mortality rate within 90 days of revision of a hip replacement increased from 0.2 per cent in 2018 to 1.7 per cent in 2019.
- The percentage of emergency hip replacements requiring revision has increased from 25.5 per cent in 2014 to 38.0 per cent in 2019.
- Hip replacement revisions now account for an increasingly vast proportion of arthroplasty procedures in Scotland.
