Asthma substantially interferes with sex life, survey finds

Nearly half of the individuals with asthma find the condition negatively affecting their sex life, says a new survey from Asthma UK.

An online survey of 2072 adults with asthma in the UK was conducted in February 2020.

Forty-four per cent of the respondents said asthma had gotten in the way of their sex life. One in 10 individuals reported experiencing an asthma attack during sex. A quarter of the respondents said they had to change positions to help with their breathing during sex, and 21 per cent reported the need to use their inhaler during sex. Thirty-one per cent of respondents reported that their condition decreased their sexual confidence. One in three individuals said they have had to cancel or cut short a date as a result of asthma symptoms.

Furthermore, people with asthma are unlikely to benefit from romance-enhancing elements. More than half of the respondents said perfume or scented candles could trigger their symptoms, and 23 per cent said a bouquet of red roses could potentially cause a flare-up of symptoms.

Dr Andy Whittamore, Clinical Lead at Asthma UK, suggests that symptoms which dampen the mood during a date or hamper sex life could be a sign of inadequately managed asthma.
