Brighton GP practices re-open after coronavirus scare

Two GP practices in Brighton that were linked to a case of novel coronavirus COVID-19 have re-opened.

Following the announcement last week that one of the confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK is from the Brighton and Hove area, Public Health England (PHE) is carrying out a thorough risk assessment to trace this individual’s movements in the last fortnight.

In a statement yesterday (12 Feb 2020), the NHS Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group said two GP practices who share the same building in Brighton and Hove were cleaned as a precaution but are now running as normal. A very small number of patient appointments were rearranged to allow this to happen, the statement said.

The number of confirmed cases of the virus in the UK hit nine yesterday (12 Feb 2020). According to a statement from the Chief Medical Officer, the virus was contracted in China and the patient has been transferred to a specialist centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in London.

Five of the confirmed UK cases were reported in Brighton and Hove. All of the cases are adults, and the virus was contracted in France. The patients from Brighton and Hove have been transferred to specialist centres outside of the city.
