BTS guidance on air travel for people with respiratory disease

The British Thoracic Society (BTS) has issued draft guidance on air travel for passengers with respiratory disease, which is timely given for the ongoing outbreak of 2019 novel coronavirus.

The clinical statement covers a wide range of issues including pre-flight assessment and hypoxic challenge testing.

The guidance sets out disease-specific recommendations covering the following:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Thoracic surgery and other interventional procedures
  • Pleural disease
  • Respiratory infections
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome
  • Respiratory muscle and chest wall disorders
  • Venous thromboembolism
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Lung cancer and mesothelioma
  • Hyperventilation and dysfunctional breathing

A summary of potential risks posed by air travel in individual conditions is presented.
