Cancer incidence in England: 2018 preliminary report

The Office of National Statistics recently published the preliminary report on cancer registrations (incidence) in England for 2018. The final report is expected to be published in spring 2020.

Key findings from the report are as follows:

  • In 2018, 316,680 new cases of invasive cancer, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers, were diagnosed in England, which translates to 868 cancers diagnosed per day.
  • Males had a greater number of cancer diagnoses than women (165,228 vs 151,452).
  • Breast, prostate, lung or bowel cancer accounted for 54.0 per cent of all cancer registrations.
  • In 2018, prostate cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer, overtaking breast cancer for the first time.
  • There were 7828 more registrations of prostate cancer in 2018 than in 2017. This increase can be attributed to the ‘Fry and Turnbull effect’, wherein diagnoses in celebrities improved the symptom awareness of prostate cancer.
  • There were 1686 more registrations of female breast cancer in 2018 than in 2017.
  • The total number of all invasive cancer cases among both sexes increased from 7205 in 2017 to 13,776 in 2018.
