Cerebral palsy in adults: NICE issues a new quality standard

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has issued a new quality standard focusing on the care and support for individuals with cerebral palsy aged ≥25 years.

The key goals of the quality standard are improvements in the following areas:

  • Quality of life;
  • Functional independence;
  • Pain;
  • Participation; and
  • Unplanned hospitalisation.

The quality standard covers the following five recommendations:

  1. Individuals with cerebral palsy should be referred to a specialist multidisciplinary team if there is an apparent or expected deterioration of their ability to carry out usual daily activities.
  2. Individuals with cerebral palsy having complex needs should receive an annual review from a health care professional specialising in neurodisabilities.
  3. Individuals with cerebral palsy who need support to live independently should be referred to a professional specialised in independent living.
  4. Individuals with cerebral palsy who need support to work should be referred to a professional specialised in vocational skills and independent living.
  5. Individuals with cerebral palsy having difficulties in communication should have their need for intervention evaluated by speech and language therapy services.

Health professionals should also consider the quality standards on the following when providing services for cerebral palsy: physical activity: encouraging activity in the community, cerebral palsy in children and young people, transition from children's to adults' services and transition between inpatient hospital settings and community or care home settings for adults with social care needs.
