Health Minister Robin Swann has issued a statement regarding the use of face coverings by general public in Northern Ireland. The announcement came after a meeting of the Executive on Thursday to discuss the potential role of face coverings in maintaining the safety of people.
Minister Swann stated: "It is agreed that we recommend that members of the public consider the use of face coverings for short periods in enclosed spaces, where social distancing is not possible."
There is no conclusive evidence on the overall protection provided by face coverings, but their use can be considered in particular circumstances, particularly relating to public transport and retail environments.
Minister Swann has clarified that face coverings will not be mandatory, and essentially, face coverings should not create any false sense of security about the level of protection provided. The use of face coverings by the general public is not a substitute for social distancing or regular handwashing. He has also emphasised on following the ‘catch it, kill it, bin it’ approach when sneezing or coughing.
