Dementia risk reduction: WHO guidelines

Vitamins B and E, polyunsaturated fatty acids and multi-complex supplementation should not be recommended to reduce the risk of cognitive decline, according to new guidelines published by the World Health Organization (WHO) this week. 

The new guidelines provide a knowledge base for healthcare providers to advise patients on what they can do to help prevent cognitive decline and dementia, and provide advice in areas including weight management, nutritional interventions and the management of co-morbidities. 

The authors recommend that interventions for tobacco cessation be offered to adults who use tobacco as it may reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in addition to other health benefits. They make a conditional recommendation for cognitive training to be offered to older adults with normal cognition and with mild cognitive impairment to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and/or dementia.

The authors say there is insufficient evidence to recommend the use of anti-depressant medicines for reducing the risk of cognitive decline and/or dementia in patients with normal cognition or mild cognitive impairment and depressive disorder. They also say there is insufficient evidence to recommend the use of hearing aids to reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
