Extra places open up on PrEP Impact Trial– but slowly

  • Two-thirds (67%) of PrEP Impact Trial sites outside of London have now received approval from commissioners and clinics to accept additional places on trial. Release of the additional places will begin in April, according to the April PrEP trial update from NHS England.
  • In London, only 60% of the 4,337 extra places allocated have so far been accepted.

The London Sexual Health Programme (LSHP) is working to agree a collective response from London commissioners and local authorities to accepting additional places across the capital. The LSHP says it will ‘shortly’ complete the final phase of work to confirm the participation of all London authorities. NHS England will issue a further update once the London position has been finalised.

While welcoming the increases that have been accepted, campaigners are angry at the continuing delay in opening new places at a large number of trial sites, especially in London.

Yusef Azad, Director of Strategy at NAT (National AIDS Trust), said: “Over half of London's sexual health clinics are turning away gay and bisexual men in need of PrEP. Men are getting HIV as a result. We now need urgently for London's elected leaders to take ownership of this issue.”

Ian Green, Chief Executive at the Terrence Higgins Trust called the situation “a mess”. The Trust called on NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care and local councils to commit to making PrEP routinely available in England.
