Factors influencing uptake of meningococcal vaccination identified

Takeaway

  • Factors including ethnicity, deprivation and factors driving engagement with and perception of general practice could potentially influence the uptake of MenACWY vaccine in primary care.

A new study published in the Journal of Public Health has identified several independent factors which may influence the uptake of meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccination in primary care. These include age group, ethnicity, deprivation and factors driving engagement with and perception of general practice.

Researchers obtained uptake data for MenACWY vaccine from general practices across 20 National Health Service Clinical Commissioning Groups in North West England using the ImmForm vaccination system, and data on general practice characteristics from the National General Practice Profiles resource.

Both univariable and multivariable regression analysis showed that vaccination uptake increased with increasing proportion of individuals aged 15-24 years, increasing percentage of individuals from an ethnic minority, and increasing recommendation of the practice.

In contrast, a lower vaccination uptake was associated with increasing deprivation. Multivariable analysis also showed increased vaccination uptake with total Quality and Outcomes Framework points.

"Our findings are highly relevant to public health because even small increases in vaccination uptake at the population level are highly effective in reducing disease incidence," the authors commented. "The findings are also applicable to all vaccination programmes delivered in primary care that are targeted at adolescents," they added.
