Four more UK cases of COVID-19 confirmed

The Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed that four more individuals in England have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to 13.

In a statement, the Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, said the new cases were contracted on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which has been under quarantine in a Japanese port since 1 February.

The British nationals who had been on board the ship for the last month were flown back to the UK from Tokyo on Friday (21 February). More cases are possible as the results of testing of the other evacuated British passengers are still awaited.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency says it is prioritising work to support and authorise the development of potential COVID-19 vaccines and clinical trials of new medicines.

The agency says it is on standby to ensure that applications relating to COVID-19 are dealt with swiftly.
