Funding boost for Wales Cancer Bank

The Wales Cancer Bank housed in Cardiff University has received more than £2.4 million in funding from the Welsh Government to support its contributions to cancer research. The funding is a part of the government's £44 million investment to strengthen research across the health and social care domains.

The Wales Cancer Bank is a leading cancer tissue bank in the world and one of the largest and most prominent biobanks in the UK. The biobank collects tissue and blood samples from Welsh patients, which play a crucial role in clinical research. More than 15,000 patients have donated samples to the biobank in the past 15 years, and >7000 samples have been provided to cancer researchers in the last four years.

The funding will support the Wales Cancer Bank’s initiatives over the next five years. It will allow expansion of the biobank's services to the global cancer research community and to the UK’s network of clinical trials for multiple cancer types.

Dr Richard Clarkson, Science Director of the Wales Cancer Bank, said: "We are delighted to receive this award from Health and Care Research Wales, which recognises the service provision by Wales Cancer Bank and provides us with the opportunity to increase our capacity in the future."
