Heart attacks and strokes in patients with diabetes to rise sharply by 2035

A recent analysis by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) indicates that the number of individuals experiencing heart attacks and strokes as a consequence of diabetes is set to rise by 29% by 2035.

The report reveals that the rising number of individuals with diabetes could translate to nearly 39,000 patients with diabetes having a heart attack in 2035, an increase of 9000 compared with 2015. Also, >50,000 individuals could have a stroke, an increase of 11,000 compared with 2015.

It is believed that England's current diabetic population of 4 million will grow to 5 million during the next 20 years. Presence of diabetes is known to increase the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes by 2 to 4 times. Additionally, the rise in the number of diabetes cases is also likely to increase the incidence of angina and heart failure.

This rise is also likely to put a significant economic burden on the NHS; the annual cost of diabetes treatment in 2035 is expected to be £16.9 billion compared with £9.8 billion in 2012.

Simon Gillespie, CEO of BHF said: "Thanks to research we’ve made excellent progress in improving survival rates for heart attacks and strokes. However, today’s figures point to an extremely worrying trend. We can only reverse this trend by taking bold action to tackle obesity and inactivity, especially amongst young people."
