Highlights of the 2018 Health Survey for England

NHS digital has published the findings of 'The Health Survey for England 2018' highlighting the trends in health and care. For the 2018 survey, 8178 adults (age, ≥16 years) and 2072 children (age, 0-15 years) were interviewed and 4825 adults and 1103 children had a nurse visit.

Key findings from the report are as follows:

  • Forty-three per cent of adults aged ≥16 years and 16 per cent of children aged up to 15 years had at least one longstanding clinical condition.
  • Seventeen per cent of men and 18 per cent of women aged ≥16 years had ever been diagnosed with asthma.
  • The proportion of children aged 0-15 years with diagnosed asthma was 10 per cent in 2018. This represents a reduction of 10 percentage points since 2001-2002.
  • Fifty-six per cent of adults had an elevated risk of various degrees for chronic disease owing to their waist circumference and body mass index.
  • The rates of obesity and morbid obesity in men were 26 per cent and two per cent, respectively, and in women were 29 per cent and four per cent, respectively.
  • Twenty-seven per cent of adults were 'inactive' (<30 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity per week).
  • Some form of gambling activity during the past 12 months was practised by 39 per cent of adults.
  • Nineteen per cent of men and 28 per cent of women aged ≥65 years reported an unmet need with at least one Activity of Daily Living.
