HIV organisations sign up to public health funding plea.

Over 80 health and local government organisations have given their names to a new Consensus Statement urging the UK government to increase investment in public health. Sexual health services are among those affected by what the statement calls “a public health funding crisis”.

The Consensus Statement on Sustainable Funding for Public Health says: “We call on Government to increase investment in public health in England to prevent ill health, reduce health inequalities, and support a sustainable health and social care system.”

The statement points out that:

  • In the 2015 Budget, the Chancellor announced a £200 million in-year cut to the Public Health Grant.
  • This was followed by a further real-terms cut averaging 3.9% each year (until 2020/21) in the 2015 Spending Review.
  • Overall, the Public Health Grant is expected to suffer a £700 million real-terms reduction between 2014/15 and 2019/20—a fall of 23.5% per person
  • Sexual health spending is expected to fall by 25% between 2014/15 and 2019/20.

HIV-related organisations who have signed the statement include the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV; the British HIV Association; the National Aids Trust and the Terence Higgins Trust. The British Medical Association and several of the Royal Colleges are also signatories. The statement is published online by the signatory organisations.
