HPV vaccine coverage in England remains below 85%

HPV vaccine coverage of adolescent girls in England remained stable for the 2017/18 period and is consistent with levels reported in 2016/17, according to the latest data from Public Health England (PHE).

In 2017/18, 83.8 per cent of year 9 females completed the two-dose HPV vaccination course, compared to 83.1 per cent in 2016/17 and 85.1 per cent in 2015/16, while 86.7 per cent completed the then three-dose HPV vaccine course in 2013/14.

HPV vaccine coverage for the priming dose in year 8 in 2017/18 was 86.9 per cent, compared with 87.2 per cent in 2016/17, 87.0 per cent in 2015/16 and 89.4 per cent in 2014/15.

During the 2017/18 academic year, the continued commitment to deliver on the childhood flu vaccine programme, now extended to five school years from reception to year 4, may have continued to impact on the capacity of school immunisation providers to deliver the HPV vaccination programme in some areas, PHE said.

Currently only girls and men who have sex with men are eligible to receive the HPV vaccine in England. However, it is expected that from the 2019/20 academic school year, 12-to-13 year old boys will also become eligible. This follows a government announcement in July based on positive advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).
