Latest heart disease statistics for Scotland

The Information Services Division in Scotland has published its annual update on heart disease statistics for the year ending 31 March 2019. The report provides latest data on the incidence, mortality, hospital activity and 30-day survival after first admission in patients with heart disease.

Key findings from the report are as follows:

  • The incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) decreased by 19 per cent over the last decade, with very little variation in the last four years.
  • In 2018, there were 6615 deaths in Scotland attributable to CHD. Although the CHD mortality rate in Scotland has declined by 32 per cent over the last 10 years, the rate of decline has slowed in the last five years.
  • The incidence and mortality rates for heart attacks have declined over the last 10 years; however, the decline in mortality rate has slowed in the last five years, and the mortality rate from heart attacks has increased slightly since 2016.
  • There has been a 10 per cent increase in hospital admissions for heart attacks in the last 10 years.
  • In 2018-2019, the 30-day survival rate following the first heart attack was 93 per cent compared with 89 per cent a decade earlier.
  • The incidence and mortality rates for heart failure have declined over the 10-year period, and there was an improvement in the 30-day survival rate over the same period.
