Latest statistics on obesity, physical activity and diet in England

NHS Digital has published a new report highlighting the statistics on obesity, physical activity and diet in England for the year 2018-2019. The report also includes data on obesity-related hospital admissions.

Key findings from the report are as follows:

  • Obesity directly accounted for 11,117 hospital admissions in 2018-2019. This represents a rise of 4 per cent from 2017-2018, when there were 10,660 admissions.
  • Obesity was a factor in 876,000 hospital admissions in 2018-2019. This represents a rise of 23 per cent from 2017-2018, when there were 711,000 admissions.
  • Sixty-seven per cent of men and 60 per cent of women were either overweight or obese. Twenty-six per cent of men and 29 per cent of women were classified as obese.
  • 20.2 per cent of children in school year 6 were classified as obese. Among them, compared with the least deprived areas, the prevalence of obesity was more than twice in the most deprived areas.
  • Sixty-seven per cent of adults were considered to be physically active (based on government guidelines). The current physical activity guidelines were met by 47 per cent of children and young individuals.
  • In 2018, 28 per cent of adults were eating the recommended five portions of fruits and vegetables a day. The figure in children of age between five years and 15 years was 18 per cent.
  • The mean intake of free sugars and saturated fats was higher than government recommendations across all age groups.
