Most Welsh people are supporting local lockdowns, shows survey

Public Health Wales (PHW) has been conducting weekly surveys since April 2020 to highlight the effect of COVID-19 on the physical, mental and social well-being of Welsh people and how they are coping with the pandemic.

Key findings for the period from 7 September 2020 to 13 September 2020 are as follows:

  • Ninety-one per cent of respondents said they supported local lockdowns in areas where cases of COVID-19 are on the rise.
  • Sixty-six per cent of respondents believed the national restrictions were about right, 29 per cent believed they were not adequate and 5 per cent believed they were too much.
  • Thirty-one per cent of respondents reported gaining weight during the COVID-19 restrictions, whereas 23 per cent said they had lost weight.
  • Forty-three per cent of respondents reported not having left their home to exercise in the last seven days, and 30 per cent reported not exercising at all during the last seven days.

Emphasising the importance of regular exercise, Professor Karen Hughes from PHW said: "Doing something active every day can help put some routine and structure into the day, as well as managing your mood and stress levels and improving sleep. This is especially important during Coronavirus as more people are staying at home and social interactions have reduced for many."
