NHS England to offer online support for type 2 diabetes

NHS England will offer first of its kind online advice to individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) to assist them in managing their condition. This online portal will deliver evidence-based information and support to patients with T2D to help them tackle the physical and mental challenges of diabetes in an easy and convenient manner.

Trials of the online service showed individuals utilising online courses and information experienced a significant reduction in their blood glucose levels. It also led to substantial improvements in the mental health of newly diagnosed patients.

Once available, the service will provide educational courses and trustworthy information pertaining to lifestyle changes and online support for emotional wellbeing of individuals with diabetes. The service will be piloted at 11 sites this year and is expected to be rolled out across the country in 2020.

Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS England's National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity, said: "Access to trusted information and support is key to helping people manage their diabetes and this online tool helps deliver this as part of our Long Term Plan to tackle major conditions and diseases."
