NICE recommends innovative biopolymer dressing for acute and chronic wounds

In a new medtech innovation briefing, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended LQD Spray for the treatment of acute and chronic wounds.

LQD Spray is an innovative spray-on primary wound dressing comprising a modified biopolymer chitosan (chitosan FH02). The biopolymer electrostatically interacts with cell surfaces and other biomolecules to slow bleeding, improve inflammatory cell function, promote the development of new blood vessels and connective tissue, provide antimicrobial and antifungal activity and strengthen repaired tissue.

LQD Spray is sprayed over the wound from a distance of 10 cm after cleaning or debridement of the wound. A transparent and elastic chitosan-containing film is created over the wound within two minutes, which acts as a primary dressing and physically protects the wound's surface. The LQD spray dressing does not always need a secondary dressing.

Currently available standard primary wound dressing options for patients with acute and chronic wounds include foam dressings, film dressings or hydrofibre dressings. Evidence from four observational studies showed that LQD Spray could decrease the wound size and pain in patients with acute and chronic wounds.
