No change in calorie guidelines, PHE clarifies

Public Health England (PHE) has clarified that the guidelines on daily calorie consumption will not change, as suggested in some media reports. The PHE maintains that the current recommendations on the number of calories to be consumed per day for maintaining a healthy weight will remain the same. Women should target daily intake of 2000 calories from food and drink, whereas the target remains 2500 calories for men.

PHE's upcoming campaign on calories to be launched in the spring of 2018 is all about creating awareness among the public on fulfilling the calorie requirements from the 3 primary meals of the day, especially when more and more people are eating on the run. A simple rule of thumb of 400:600:600 (calories to be consumed at breakfast, lunch and dinner) should help individuals meet their targets. The remainder can come through snacks and drinks consumed between meals.

PHE is also looking to collaborate with high street food chains to promote healthy eating, since eating out accounts for a considerable proportion of calories.
