PHE launches new cervical screening campaign

Public Health England (PHE) recently launched a new campaign titled ‘Cervical Screening Saves Lives’ with the goal of increasing the cervical screening uptake among women in England.

As a part of the campaign, women will be encouraged to respond to their cervical screening invitation letter, and to get an appointment with their GP practice in case they have missed their previous screening.

Data show that uptake of screening in the United Kingdom is currently at a 20-year low, with 1 in 4 eligible women (aged 25 to 64 years) not attending their screening. Research from PHE has shown that 94 per cent of women who have attended cervical screening are likely to encourage other women who are hesitant to attend their screening. Research also shows that the majority of women feel positive about the experience of screening after they have been screened.

The new campaign aims to provide practical information on making the screening more comfortable and reassuring women who have a fear of positive cancer diagnosis that screening is not a test for cancer.

Professor Anne Mackie, Director of Screening Programmes at PHE said: "We want to see a future generation free of cervical cancer, but we will only achieve our vision if women take up their screening invitations."
