Presence of psoriasis could up the risk for asthma

Patients with psoriasis may have an increased risk for asthma susceptibility, the risk being higher in older patients than in younger patients, a new meta-analysis published in the journalAllergy and Asthma Proceedingssuggests.

For this meta-analysis, researchers conducted a literature search across PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and other databases and identified 6 studies (retrospective cohort,3; cross-sectional cohort,3) that compared the risk for asthma in patients with psoriasis (n=66,772) and control group (n=577,415).

The pooled analysis of all trials showed an increased risk for asthma in patients with psoriasis compared with the control group (OR, 1.32; P<.00001). Risk for asthma susceptibility was significantly higher in older patients with psoriasis (age, ≥50 years; OR, 1.64; P<.00001) compared with the younger patients (age, 20-49 years old; OR, 1.25; P=.002). In the subgroup analysis, the risk for asthma was higher in Asian populations (OR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.18-1.54) and white populations (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.05-1.54) with psoriasis vs control group.

“Although the specific mechanisms of association between asthma and psoriasis are not entirely clear, all the patients with psoriasis should be screened for asthma if they are experiencing any respiratory symptoms,’’ the authors suggested.
