Report recommends integrating psychological support into diabetes care

In the latest report from the Diabetes All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), a key recommendation has been made to integrate psychological support into diabetes care. The recommendation comes after the Diabetes APPG earlier this year heard how lack of emotional and psychological support could impact the management of diabetes.

Emotional distress is seen in 4 out of 10 individuals with diabetes, which affects their ability to manage their condition. Moreover, it has significant implications for their long-term health and the NHS. The report highlights the challenges patients face in getting access to support services and also the and healthcare professionals trying to make these services available for the patients. The report also calls for improvement and development of opportunities for peer support for individuals with diabetes.

Speaking about the importance of psychological support, Nikki Joule, Policy Manager at Diabetes UK said: "Emotional and psychological health is paramount and we must take every step possible to ensure that every person with diabetes has access to the support that they need."
