Sarcopenia tied to increased risk for cognitive impairment

According to a new meta-analysis published in the journal Clinical Nutrition, sarcopenia is independently associated with an increased risk for cognitive impairment.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 15 studies identified through a literature search on the PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and Google Scholar databases.

In a random-effects model, the unadjusted pooled OR for cognitive impairment in patients with sarcopenia vs patients without sarcopenia was 2.85 (95% CI, 2.19-3.72). After adjusting for confounders, the pooled OR was 2.25 (95% CI, 1.70-2.97). In a sensitivity analysis, the pooled OR was 1.87 (95% CI, 1.38-2.54) after excluding studies of fair quality (eight out of 15). The association between cognitive impairment and sarcopenia remained significant in the subgroup analyses by the study population, study region, the definition of sarcopenia and cognitive impairment.

The authors commented: "Early prevention of cognitive impairment might focus on the better recognition and amelioration of sarcopenia." They call for further prospective studies to substantiate the directional association between sarcopenia and cognitive impairment.
