Scotland announces additional funding for mental health support

The Scottish Government has announced an additional investment to help children and families during COVID-19 pandemic. The ongoing lockdown in the UK, including Scotland, is likely to have affected the mental health of many individuals.

The funding worth more than £1 million will go to the key mental health services that support families, young people and individuals with autism. The announcement was made by Health Secretary Jeane Freeman on 3 May 2020.

The funding will be allocated as follows:

  • £768,000 towards The Spark counselling service which provides a relationships helpline.
  • £105,000 towards Young Scot to create enhanced digital content and resources regarding mental health.
  • £205,000 towards 47,000 individuals across Scotland living with autism, including funding to increase capacity at the Scottish Autism Helpline and assistance for the National Autistic Society to remain connected online with individuals during lockdown.

Ms Freeman said: "This crisis means many people are dealing with anxiety, fear, uncertainty, anger or sadness. They may feel overwhelmed and relationships can be placed under a lot of pressure. We want to ensure that the right help and support is in place for the mental wellbeing of our children, young people and families."

The ‘Clear Your Head' campaign was launched in Scotland last week to promote practical methods to maintain good mental health and well-being while continuing to stay at home.
