Upcoming research suggests that patients with osteoarthritis could benefit from a novel stem-cell technique currently being tested. If successful, it could open up new treatment avenues, which would eventually reduce the need for invasive surgery.
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh plan to develop the first osteoarthritis model in human tissue with the help of discarded hip fragments received from patients undergoing routine surgery. Using the model, scientists will determine ways to introduce a patient’s stem cells within damaged joints, which could transform into cartilage cells and replace the injured tissue.
Speaking about the research, Dr Anish Amin from the University of Edinburgh, said: "The potential to regrow damaged joint tissue from the patient’s own stem cells is very exciting and really is the ultimate treatment solution. We are hopeful that our research will come up with promising results."
