Switching from tablet to liquid levothyroxine could improve suboptimal TSH

Patients with suboptimal levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) receiving levothyroxine tablet formulation showed improvement in TSH after switching to liquid formulation of levothyroxine at the same dose. The findings were reported by a meta-analysis published in the journal Frontiers in Endocrinology.

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 6 studies identified through a literature search on the PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus databases. All studies evaluated patients with suboptimal TSH receiving levothyroxine tablets who were switched to liquid formulation (n=141).

In the pooled analysis, the mean difference of TSH value between levothyroxine tablet and levothyroxine liquid formulation was 4.23 mIU/L (95% CI, 3.69-4.77). When single studies were considered, TSH levels were found to drop in all cases with a mean difference from 1.87 mIU/L to 5.70 mIU/L. There was a significant overall mean difference of TSH (P<.0001).

"Our findings may find value in clinical practice for treating patients with refractory hypothyroidism," the authors concluded.
