The National Influenza Immunisation Programme 2019-2020 has been introduced in Wales.

The influenza vaccine eligibility for the 2019-2020 programme is:

  • Children aged two and three years as of 31 August 2019
  • Children attending primary school from reception class to year 6 (inclusive)
  • Individuals aged ≥65 years
  • Individuals aged six months to
  • Pregnant women
  • Individuals residing in care homes or other long-stay care facilities
  • Carers (excludes teachers, and nursery or social workers)
  • Individuals in close contact with immunocompromised patients

The vaccine uptake targets for 2019-2020 remain the same as the previous season.

  • Individuals aged ≥65 years and pregnant women: 75% uptake
  • Individuals aged six months to 64 years in clinical risk groups: 55% uptake
  • Health care workers involved in direct patient care: 60% uptake

To assist with immunisation planning for the forthcoming season, some key messages have been issued by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Frank Atherton.

  • Children are termed ‘super-spreaders’ of influenza, but show excellent effectiveness to the vaccine. It is essential to increase vaccination uptake in all eligible children, especially those aged 2 and 3 years, to reduce influenza transmission across all groups in the community.
  • Vaccine uptake in individuals
  • Health and social care workers are responsible for preventing infections in the people they care for. Increasing uptake in these groups is crucial to lowering the transmission of infection to vulnerable patients and service users.
