Breast cancer screening in England: 2018-2019 provisional data

NHS Digital has published the provisional statistics on the NHS Breast Screening Programme in England for 2018-2019. The Breast Screening Programme in England offers screening to all eligible women from 50 years of age up to their 71st birthday.

Key findings from the report are as follows:

  • A total of 1.87 million women aged 50-70 years underwent breast cancer screening in 2018-2019. This represents an increase of 1.8 per cent from 2017-2018.
  • 74.6 per cent of eligible women aged 53-70 years were screened in 2018-2019. This represents a decline of 0.3 percentage points from 2017-2018.
  • The invitation for breast cancer screening was taken up by 71.1 per cent of women aged 50-70 years. This represents an increase of 0.6 percentage points from 2017-2018.
  • Breast cancer was detected in 15,285 women aged 50-70 years, which translates to 8.2 cases per 1000 women screened.
