A new interactive tool estimates that the highest paid footballer in the world makes the average GP’s annual salary in just over an hour and a half.
The Footy 100 tool, developed by Online Mortgage Advisor, calculates how much football players across different leagues are paid, and compares their earnings to other common occupations, including GPs.
The tool reveals that Barcelona’s Lionel Messi makes a combined £97 million from his football salary (£70m) and endorsement earnings (£27m).
In comparison, the tool averages the annual salary of a British GP as £74,000, which is 1,300 times less than Messi’s yearly earnings. In fact, Messi makes a GP’s entire year’s wage in just one hour and 35 minutes.
While Messi made a staggering £2.4 million for every goal he scored last year, a typical GP will make around £7-8 per patient they treat, based on seeing about 40 patients a day.
Based on the average GP’s wage, it would take them 45,878 years to pay off Messi’s mortgage - or 605 lifetimes. It would take them 137 lifetimes to save up for the required deposit alone!
