The Scottish Government has announced a £1 million fund to support women with transvaginal mesh complications. The use of transvaginal mesh in Scotland was stopped in September 2018 owing to post-implant complications, and there have been no prospects of it being reintroduced.
The scheme implemented by NHS National Services Scotland will be available to women who have experienced complications after undergoing vaginal mesh implantation by or on behalf of a Scottish health board. It will start accepting applications at the start of July 2020 and will continue until the end of June 2021. Eligible women will receive a one-time payment of £1000 towards expenses associated with emotional or practical support.
Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said: "We have made the application process as simple and straightforward as possible and hope the fund will help those who experienced hardship as a result of the complications caused by mesh implants."
