The Department of Health in Northern Ireland recently published the statistics on medical abortions and terminations of pregnancy during 2018-2019. The data in the report were sourced from the Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts in Northern Ireland.
Key findings from the report are as follows:
- Eight terminations of pregnancy were performed in HSC hospitals in Northern Ireland during 2018-2019, which was four less than the figure in 2017-2018. It should be noted that relatively large fluctuations are likely to occur year after year because of small numbers.
- All the eight terminations of pregnancy during 2018-2019 were performed on women who were residents of Northern Ireland.
- Five terminations of pregnancy were performed on women aged ≥30 years, one on a woman aged 25-29 years and two on women aged ≤24 years.
